FISHBONE

A Sculptural Beach Retreat Rooted in Nature

This in-progress contemporary beach house is a refined expression of structure, sustainability, and site—designed as a boutique retreat on the shores of Lake Michigan. Inspired by the anatomy of a fishbone, the home is organized around a central service spine with expressive structural “ribs” that frame sweeping volumes, drawing guests toward the water and landscape beyond.

At just 3,300 square feet, the house is deceptively compact—sleeping 12 with ease—yet it lives large thanks to layered outdoor living spaces, a rooftop deck, and strategic views that maximize both privacy and connection to the lake. Textured, organic materials and a palette drawn from dune grasses and shoreline stone ground the home in its coastal setting. A planted green roof furthers its integration with nature while supporting passive sustainability strategies.
