FISHBONE HOUSE

LAKE MICHIGAN, MI

In-progress design of contemporary beach house on Lake Michigan. Based on the concept of a fishbone: a central spine & ribs. The spine contains secondary & utility functions. The ribs are the structural frame. The larger volumes in between spine & ribs contain all the main functions. The materials are crisp and textured with the colors being taken from the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. The house has a great economy of space: it sleeps 12 with only 3300s.f.  Views are tailored to public spaces of the house and the lakeside. Living and dining face the water with twin outdoor dining and living spaces as well as a screen porch with a roof deck. Integration with nature and sustainability are also important. Much of the roof is a living roof with beach grass, the rest is solar panel.
